This traditional three-year internal medicine program is comprised of rotations in general medicine, critical care, emergency room, cardiology, non cardiac telemetry, women’s health, geriatrics, electives and ambulatory medicine. In addition to rotations at Griffin Hospital, second and third year residents have the opportunity to complete their elective rotations in various sub-specialties on a consult service at Yale-New Haven Hospital or the Yale-affiliated West Haven VA Hospital. Residents also benefit from an exclusive cardiac catheterization laboratory rotation at Bridgeport Hospital.

At Griffin Hospital, most medical patients are admitted to team care. A team care unit typically is comprised of an attending physician and a PGY-2 or PGY-3 supervising resident, two interns and two medical students. The house staff are responsible for writing the admission history and physical exam, orders, progress notes and continued management of patients under close supervision of attending physicians. Daily activities of the team includes, resident work rounds, teaching attending rounds, morning report, multidisciplinary rounds and noon conferences. In addition all first year residents get dedicated bed side physical diagnosis teaching.
Ambulatory Rotations
Ambulatory Rotations cover a broad spectrum of outpatient medicine from out patient primary care and Geriatrics to Women's Health. Ambulatory or office based rotations can be spent in primary care or sub specialty clinics. All Internal medicine interns and residents spend one half day a week during floor rotations and one full day a week during elective and ambulatory rotations at the Griffin Hospital Outpatient Clinic.
The Griffin Hospital Outpatient Clinic serves as the primary ambulatory site for the Griffin Hospital residency program. Residents are assigned a panel of patients whom they follow for the duration of their training. The residents are supervised at all times by a dedicated clinic preceptor. Ambulatory conferences, quality improvement projects are part of the ambulatory core curriculum. The full time ambulatory teaching faculty along with the diverse patient cohort makes this primary care clinic an excellent environment to learn out patient and office based medicine.
Emergency Department Rotation
The ED Rotation at Griffin Hospital, is completed in the hospital's newly renovated state of the art Emergency Department. The first year residents typically spend three 12-hour shifts a week working under the supervision of an Emergency Department physician. During this rotation the PGY1 resident is responsible for all aspects of evaluation and treatment of ER patients under supervision.
Geriatrics Rotation
All second year internal medicine residents spend four weeks with the full time geriatric medicine faculty at Griffin Hospital.
